Everything not forbidden is mandatory
Jan. 8th, 2006 07:26 pmI just spent 5 hours driving a rental car that beeped incessantly (and off-key!) whenever I tried to go over 64 mph. No warning lights, not overheated, oil and gas levels are fine. Turning up the music melted my eardrums yet somehow did not drown out the sound.
Is this some nefarious plot by Homeland Security and/or state Highway Patrol to curb speeding? Because, dammit, it worked. Well, for the first 180 miles. After that, I was deaf.
Edited to update:
So a call to the car rental company produced some mildly amusing conversation. (Phone agent: "Are you sure the overdrive isn't off?" Me: "This car doesn't have overdrive." Phone agent: "Oh. Well, is the overdrive on?") More importantly, I was able to exchange the car for another one which did not beep at any speed. Needless to say, the return trip was significantly faster. And much quieter.
